TAJ MAHAL
TAJ MAHAL
The Taj Mahal is an ivory-white marble mausoleum on the south bank of the Yamuna river in the Indian city of Agra. It was commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan, to house the tomb of his favorite wife.
The Taj Mahal is known to have cost 32 million rupees to be built back in the 17th century. Based on inflation and exchange rates, the equivalent of that amount in today's time is supposed to be in excess of $1 billion. Of course, the cost of building the Taj is only just that - cost of a building.
Mumtaz Mahal was Shah Jahan's third wife. Her name was originally Arjumand Bano Begum but when she married Shah Jahan she was christened as MumtazMahal which means 'Jewel of the Palace', or 'Chosen One of the Palace'. Taj Mahal means 'crown of places'.
