  • Why are oceans important? Oceans are the lifeblood of planet Earth and humankind. They flow over nearly three-quarters of our planet, and hold 97% of the planet's water. 
They produce more than half of the oxygen in the atmosphere, and absorb the most carbon from it.
Before modern reckoning, the term "Seven Seas" has been used to refer to seven of the largest bodies of water in the world:
  • the Pacific Ocean.
  • the Atlantic Ocean.
  • the Indian Ocean.
  • the Arctic Ocean.
  • the Mediterranean Sea.
  • the Caribbean Sea.
  • the Gulf of Mexico.
